At Mermaid Energy, our process is designed to respond swiftly and sustainably to the sargassum crisis, transforming it from coastal threat to clean fuel. Here’s how we do it:
We start by tracking sargassum blooms in real time using satellite data, oceanographic models, and local observations. Early forecasting allows us to anticipate landings, mobilize teams, and coordinate with coastal communities for efficient and non-disruptive harvesting.
Before sargassum reaches harmful concentrations along coastlines, we deploy specialized harvesting equipment designed to remove it quickly and with minimal environmental impact. Our goal is bulk removal at the point where ecological benefit becomes ecological harm—protecting marine life, public health, and tourism assets.
Collected sargassum is processed on our ships, where it's converted into renewable fuel through proprietary methods tailored to its high moisture and salt content. Our technology maximizes energy recovery while ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
The resulting biofuel is delivered to regional customers—including utilities, transportation providers, and industrial users—helping replace fossil fuels and reduce emissions across the Caribbean. We're actively developing partnerships for scalable offtake and local reinvestment.
At Mermaid Energy, we are focused on ways for islands to create resilient energy grids based on 100% renewable energy, with minized reliance on emitting fuels, even the carbon-neutral ones! Our process will replace 30% of the top fossil fuels currently used on the top 9 impacted islands, streamlining the transition to 100% renewables.
Our integrated approach is designed for speed, scale, and sustainability. Every step of the process is guided by science, supported by local expertise, and focused on creating long-term value for Caribbean communities and ecosystems.
